5 Ways to Handle Getting to Work When Your License Has Been Suspended

A woman hands her license

When you have too many tickets, certain traffic violations, have failed to pay child support, or a host of other reasons, your license may be temporarily suspended. As if having your license suspended wasn’t bad enough, now you have to worry about how you’re going to get to and from work. Luckily, you do have some options. Here are 5 ways to handle the situation when you have a suspended license

1. Apply for a Work Permit

New York allows for conditional and restricted use licenses when your license is currently suspended. This means that for those who qualify, you may be permitted to drive but only within specific parameters, such as certain hours of the day and days of the week. Conditional licenses may be granted to those whose licenses were revoked due to drug- or alcohol-related violations. Restricted use permits are for situations in which the violation is not related to drugs or alcohol. It’s important to bear in mind that if you are caught driving anywhere other than to or from your job, you could receive an extended suspension time, revocation of your license, hefty fines, or even jail time.

2. Carpool

Another option when your license has been suspended is to carpool. You may want to ask a colleague, family member, friend, or someone else who lives or works close to where you are headed, to drive you. Since you would be unable to ever return the favor, it would be a good idea to chip in and pay for gasoline.

3. Take Public Transportation

If you are lucky enough to live within the vicinity of a train line, subway stop, or bus line, and said public transportation also makes a stop close to where you work, this may be a good option. Another option would be to use a ridesharing company or taxi, although this can quickly become expensive.

4. Ride a Bicycle

If you don’t live too far from where you work, other options would be to ride your bike or even walk to work. This is not only helpful for getting to and from work but also benefits both your health and the environment. However, it’s important to account for how you will clean yourself up if you become sweaty or unpresentable. If you have access to a shower at work, it may be best to take one before your day starts.

5. Telecommute

Finally, depending on the type of job you have, another option would be to telecommute or work from home, while your license is suspended. If it’s not possible to work from home full time, it may still be of great help to work from home on certain days so that you can limit the time that you need to account for other transportation.
